Richard M Ketchum - Born 5th March 1922, Pittsburgh, PA - Died 2012 (90).
'These are the times that try men's souls', wrote Tom Paine of the months that followed the American Declaration of Independence. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot - the farmers and shopkeepers who formed the basis of George Washington's tiny and ill-equipped Continental Army - would, he thought, shrink from supporting their country against the disciplined redcoats of King George III.
'The Winter Soldiers' tells the momentous story of how the tide of war turned: of how - against a background of angry debates at Westminster and divided feelings in America, and in the face of disaster and retreat on the battlefield - a tiny band of men (numbering at low ebb only 1200) survived a critical winter of fearful hardship and fought in the spring of 1777 the victorious battles of Trenton and Princeton.
Richard Ketchum's powerful narrative - aided by maps and illustrations - expertly shifts from one side of the Atlantic to the other. He introduces us to leading soldiers and civilians on both sides (George Washington, General Howe, George III and Lord North) as well as to Englishmen who backed the rebels. He also examines such little-known aspects of the war as American propaganda in England, the early peace efforts and the spy network on both sides.
Most of all, 'The Winter Soldiers' is the story of the 'few' who made American independence a reality. It is a dramatic, lucid and superbly written account of the pivotal events of the American Revolution.
