From small beginnings in 1878, with just four chartered ships, the Orient Line became a byword for travellers to and from Australia and the Far East. The Orient Line gained a reputation for providing ships of comfort and quality which were second to none - a tradition which continued up to and beyond the company's merger with P&O in 1960.

This lavishly illustrated book, a sequel to the same author's earlier '20th Century Passenger Ships of the P&O', looks at the history of the Orient Line through the stories of the company's 31 passenger ships. It describes the triumphs, such as the launch of the Orion - the liner for the future - and the tragedies, including the terrible sinking of the Otranto, only a few weeks before the end of the Second World War, with the loss of more than 400 US troops and crewmen.

The full career of each vessel is meticulously charted, with memorable incidents in each ship's life recorded with fascinating anecdotes from former passengers and crew. Weaving a unique and intricate tapestry of photographs, little-known facts, memories and events from two World Wars, Neil McCart brings to life vividly and sympathetically the glorious days of the Orient Line's prestigious fleet. Passenger liners may not ply the high seas as frequently as they once did, but this definitive work is sure to be appreciated and treasured by maritime enthusiasts for many years to come.
