'Dad's Army' originally graced television screens for nine years, and is still shown regularly. The incompetent Home Guard unit led by the bumbling, yet somehow dignified, Captain Mainwaring - Arthur Lowe in his most famous role - made, and still continues to make, a nation laugh. Lowe's comic genius helped the show become a classic and secured his very special place in the hearts of viewers.

However, Arthur Lowe was more than just one part. His acting career began when he organised shows for a British Army Field Entertainment Unit during the Second World War, and he went on to act in everything from Shakespeare to American musicals and farce. He appeared in movies as divers as 'Kind Hearts and Coronets', 'This Sporting Life' and 'Oh Lucky Man!', as well as the soap opera 'Coronation Street' for five years. Despite his successful career on TV, stage and in film, he was held back by the increasingly erratic and demanding behaviour of his wife, and he struggled to maintain his career, health and tempestuous marriage.

In 'Arthur Lowe: Dad's Memory', Stephen Lowe sets out to answer some of the questions he is always asked, such as 'Did he ever call you 'stupid boy'?, and undergoes a voyage of discovery about his father. Hugely enjoyable and revealing, this is a nostalgic, candid and deeply poignant biography of one of Britain's most fondly remembered character actors.
