A prostitute is being maliciously teased by a crowd of redneck cowboys, and the woman turns to Steele for protection. Not a man to ignore a lady in distress, Steele comes to the rescue, narrowly missing being shot in the back by the timely intervention of a nearby travelling artist. Steele is now under obligation to another man - a scene he dislikes intensely.

The cowboys hire a fast gun to get their revenge, but Steel and the gunslinger are prevented from having a shoot-out by the arrival of the sheriff. Steele is a cunning man, and by engineering a fake hold-up on a train, attacks the gunslinger and his cronies.
Steele's reputation as a fast gun spreads like wildfire. Soon he learns that glory is not for the gunfighter - only fear, violence and danger.
