The Cotswolds, nowadays, are celebrated for their rolling hills. However, deep in the valleys around Stroud, are ribbons of mills next to the rivers. They are the survivors of a once great international woollen cloth industry that supplied soldiers at Waterloo, sailors at Trafalgar and customers in China. This local broadcloth tradition reaches back to the Middle Ages and created industrial towns like Nailsworth.
This study concentrates on the history of mills close to the town and shows how their fortunes waxed and waned over the centuries, imprinting themselves on the landscape and responding to the changes in technology and fashion.
The book describes the fortunes of the people involved and the machinery they used. It demonstrates how Dunkirk became one of the most impressive mills in the South West and how it and its neighbours have survived.
