Kathleen Mary Norton (née Pearson) Born: 10th December 1903, London – Died: 29th August 1992, Bidiford, Devon (88).
The end of the story of 'The Borrowers' was, as it turned out, by no means the end of Pod, Homily, and little Arrietty. No, they escaped, and an epic journey it was, up the azalea bank through the privet hedge and across the orchard - and if you have not yet met the Borrowers, let me tell you they were about the size of the fingers and thumb of your own hands. The insects that assailed them throughout that expedition were ... 'wicked', Homily could only say, 'wicked, that's what they were!' They found a new home and adapted themselves superbly to mid-field conditions. It was harder work in every way than under-floor borrowing, and again Homily had something to say about it. 'Oblige you we'd like to, Pod,' she said, 'but we're not black slaves.' But to little Arrietty the life was enchanting with all its new adventures.

No one by now will need to be told that these are books to return to again and again. All kinds of people, old and young, have discovered that their humour, invention, and sheer imaginative genius remain perpetually fresh.
