Which are Shakespeare's problem plays? Dr Tillyard argues that there are four. Hamlet, Troilus and Cressida, All's Well That Ends Well, and Measure for Measure. Several common factors make these into a distinct group: in each of them Shakespeare is acutely in speculative thought and in the observation of human nature for their own sake; each tells of men on the verge of manhood and of the harsh experiences which force them to grow up. After discussing these general characteristics, Dr Tillyard traces their effect in the individual plays and so establishes an illuminating relationship between the four.
