Henry Fielding - Born: 22nd April 1707, Sharpham, Somerset. - Died: 8th October 1754 (47), Lisbon, Kingdom of Portugal. Pen name: 'Captain Hercules Vinegar', 'H. Scriblerus Secundus', also some works published anonymously. Occupation: Novelist, dramatist and magistrate. First published in Fielding's 'Miscellanies' in 1743, 'Jonathan Wild' bears little relation to the historical 'Thief-taker General' hanged at Tyburn in 1725.
Fielding's story is rather a moral satire on the true nature of 'greatness' when it is not legitimized by political institutions or worldly eminence. In it he draws close parallels with the Walpole administration as he relates the tale of the most notorious criminal of his generation - gang-leader, receiver, blackmailer and protection-racketeer - all the while parading the 'greatness' of his hero even unto the gallows.
This edition also contains Daniel Defoe's 'The True and Genuine Account of the Life and Action of the Late Jonathan Wild', which purports to be an authoritative account of the real Wild.
